How do you get rid of carpenter ants?

Carpenter ants are a little bigger than regular ants, live in moist, hollow, or decaying wood, and instead of living under ground can be living in the very foundation of your home.
When their nest grows, they eat away at the wood they live in and could weaken the structure of your home, causing the beams to bend, warp, or even break. That can cause your home to collapse, costing you thousands of dollars to repair!
So how do you get rid of carpenter ants? First you have to find them.
Look for sawdust trails. They will leave a trail that you can follow back to their nest. Another tip is to listen to crunching noises. They’re cutting the wood, and that makes noise, so if you listen closely you may be able to find them. If you’re having a hard time with that, leave some bait for them and wait. Try sugar or honey, something sweet. Once they get the bait, watch where they go until you can’t watch anymore, then give the floor or frame another listen. You should be able to hear where they are, and then you can take the next step.
The next step in how to get rid of carpenter ants is to make their home unlivable. Sweep up the area and make sure there aren’t any stray crumbs, as food is the reason why they are there. Once the place is clean, try boric acid baits. Like the honey bait you used to find them earlier, the boric acid bait will attract them because of the sweetness, but bring back a poison that may help kill the colony off if it’s a small colony. If the ant colony is large, you may want to drill the floor or frame with small holes and then spray ant killer.
Another tip on how to get rid of carpenter ants is that if you see the ants, don’t kill them. Follow them, especially if you thought you got rid of the colony. They may be from a new colony, or maybe you didn’t get the one you thought you did. Regardless, they are still a problem and if you kill them, your problem can only get worse.
