If you want to know how to get rid of ants, you first look out what attracts these ants and why they came around.

Ants generally arrive in middle to late spring as soon as the weather conditions start showing increase in temperature.

Ants can be found every where as well as you can find many types of ants such as red ants, black ants or any other type of ants.

If you are really interested to know how to get rid of ants, identify and remove the attracting substance such as food, sugar or any other sweet item. Most of the ants get attracted towards sweet, so do not keep open any sweet substance and clean the floor if you have poured some sweet substance on the floor. In summer the food should be refrigerated also as during summer the food and vegetables get spoiled quickly and attracts ants.

You should also clean the table promptly after having meal and take out all the trash out of your home. Try to place recycle bin as far as possible from your home. You should also avoid water pool in or around your house. Ants also need water regularly and water pool attract these often.

If you find any anthill near your home, destroy it by pouring some ant repellent on it. You may get these repellent in the market and sometimes the home made blend of water and citrus peeling also acts as repellent. You should also take care of cracks and repellent should be added at these places.

Some times you may need to pour hot water and repellent on the cracks. You may need to pour hot water over the mounds also. Enough hot water should be poured in cracks and mounds to get rid of ants. After pouring the water, you should also try to seal the cracks. Silicone caulk is the best material for sealing the crack as well as it is least toxic also.

These are some of the methods to impart the knowledge how to get rid of ants and I hope that if you follow these tips, you would definitely get rid of ants.

In my research I found that there are literally thousands of ways to control and kill ants. However, only a handful of methods that are really effective.

If you have ever watched ants at work they resemble a well-organize military unit. They appear to be well trained locators of food and water. Ants are very tenacious and when there is any food or water to be located they will find it. 12,000 species of ants exist in the world with over 200 species in California alone.

The life expectancy of ant is only 45-60 days. An ant brain has about 250,000 brain cells. The human brain has 10,000 million brain cells, but a colony of 40,000 ants has the same brain capacity as a human.

When it rains you will see fewer ants running around. In dry weather ants will multiply very quickly.

You can give the queen heartburn with this mixture:

3½ Ounces of Strawberry jam (any sweet jam will do)

1 ½ Tablespoons of wet, canned cat food (cheap brand)

1 Tablespoon of boric acid

This concoction is a treat for ants and the workers will bring the treat to their queen. The queen gets excited and quickly gobbles up the goody and within a few hours dies of heartburn. Make sure this treat is out of reach of children and animals. If ingested by children and animals, it will make them very sick. But, it doesn’t take very much to eliminate the queen.

10 ways that will you get rid of ants

If you have a bad ant problem and can’t get rid of them, distract them away from you property by putting a slice of watermelon or cantaloupe in your yard far away from your house. Other than honey this will keep them away.

If you have window boxes, clean them out and whitewash them.

Soybean (glycine max) is an excellent and repellant and has been used for many years in Africa. Just prepare the spray by soaking the plant stems in water for 24 hours then using the water as a spray. This also works for aphids and coding moths.

Place diatomaceous earth (DE), powdered charcoal, powdered pyrethrum-silica dust or bone meal around the base of the plants in an area; in which the ants are bothering the plants.

Sprinkle some fresh tansy leaves in the corners of your kitchen counter and in the windowsills it will repel ants 100%.

A vinegar cleaner can be used to wipe down cabinets and floors. Just mix a solution – 1 cup vinegar to about 2 gallons of water should do the trick.

Buy instant grits (make sure it’s instant grits and not quick grits) and sift them where you see the ants.

Put a barrier between the ants and you. Anything in crystal or flake form can be used to deter them. Salt, black pepper, red pepper, baking soda, talcum powder… the list goes on. (Used coffee grounds are said to be especially effective, even against fire ants.) Why does this work? Imagine yourself faced with a shoulder high snow drift that’s too soft to hold your weight. Would you go through it if you didn’t have to? Not hardly!

Ants don’t care for mint or citrus, cloves or bay leaves, so think orange peel, peppermint tea, lemon juice, ground cloves, etc. If you can plant mint around the foundations of your home, you may deter them from entering. Vinegar has the same acid as citrus, so use it to clean with and ants won’t feel welcome. (It probably erases or overpowers the odor trail other ants have left for them to follow.)

Another way to get rid of ants is to remove what makes your living space so attractive. What will really help you get rid of ants is cleaning up any crumbs and spills, and not leaving pet food in bowls overnight. Start by cleaning up, sealing entryways, and trying to find the nest. Just eliminate their food source.

Here’s a killer Ant Ambrosia

4-5 tbsp of cornmeal

3 tbsp of bacon grease

3 tbsp of baking powder

3 packages of baker’s yeast

Mix the cornmeal and bacon grease into a paste, then add the baking powder and yeast. Dab the gooey mix on the sides of jar lids, and set them near the anthills. The pesky critters will love it to death!

Every Spring my kitchen because home to an army of ugly black carpenter ants. I have tried pretty much everything.

Raid drops, sprays and ant traps. This year they seem particularly worse than usual.

Getting Rid of Carpenter Ants: Inside the House Carpenter ants like moist, wet wood. That’s why you’ll usually notice e carpenter ants wherever there is moist wood — around dishwashers , sinks and bathrooms.

You can find carpenter ant nest it may prove to be difficult- by tapping along wall and listing for a hollow sound. A hollow sound will usually indicate that you’ve found the nest- and you can sometimes hear the sound of the ants scrambling when you disturb the nest,

You need to get rid of the nest. Colonies within the structure should be controlled by a direct application of a pesticide. Boric acid dust, bendiocarb (Ficam) 1% dust, cyfluthrin, cypermethrin, bifenthrin, propoxur (Baygon) 0.5% in aerosol spray containers all are registered materials. Nests in wall voids often can be accessed through plumbing or electrical wiring. Electrical plates can be removed and an insecticide applied into the wall void along the outside edge of the electrical box. Ants follow wiring and plumbing routes through the structure. If the colony is inaccessible for direct treatment, a 1/8 inch drill bit can be used to make small holes in the walls so an insecticide applicator wand can be inserted for application of the insecticide. Dust formulations are effective against all Hymenoptera because the dust adheres to the hairy surfaces of their bodies. As they clean themselves and feed other ants and larvae, the insecticide is spread throughout the colony. This formulation is effective as long as it does not become wet, so it is used primarily in wall voids.

drill small holes into the wall with a drill- about 1/8 across. Do this from OUTSIDE the house. Fill the holes with with boric acid. The ants should die off after touching the acid.

Prevent Carpenter Ants from Invading Your Home! Don’t let tree branches touch your house- they will act as a bridge straight into your house. Prune these branches! If you have wood siding, don’t rest things against wood siding- rakes, shovels bags of leaves, firewood, etc. this is a breeding ground for carpenter ants! Fill crack or holes on foundation- these are doorway into your home for carpenters ants. Getting concrete grout at hardware store is cheap and filling in grout is easy to do. Good Luck!

Recently, I noticed an increase in the number of large black ants on the deck attached to the back of my house. Until my father mentioned it I did not really give it a thought but when he pointed out that these were carpenter ants I began to get a bit concerned.

The fact that some of them were working their way under the siding indicated that I should probably do something about this before it became a major issue.

Previously, I had used some commercial sprays and/or granules to control small (probably sweet or grease eating ants) colonies next to my driveway but this problem appeared to be more widespread. Checking in at the local DIY home repair superstore, I found there were a number of different options for treating this problem. What I failed to do is to consider how/when to apply my chosen solution. Note: Before applying any pesticide make sure to thoroughly read all of the instructions and warnings. It is also a good idea to discuss this with a professional or somebody who has gone through the process previously.

Choosing a concentrated liquid pesticide I applied it to my deck, foundation and portions of the siding with a garden sprayer in the areas where the ants were seen. So far, so good. However, around an hour later I ran into an unforeseen consequence of NOT getting some advice first - mainly that the ants that were disturbed and/or dying had to go someplace. Around an hour later I started to notice a tremendous number of dying ants inside my house adjacent to the treated area. Since this seemed to indicate that I might already have an ant problem in my house and not just on the deck I decided it was time to call the professionals for an analysis.

Getting some suggestions from co-workers and neighbors, I contacted a local company to have an analysis done - some of the larger franchise operations can be very expensive but the company I selected provided a free estimate and their treatment options were reasonably priced. Upon being told of the problem and what steps had been taken, they suggested a localized treatment instead of a full home treatment - a considerably less expensive option. They pointed out the likely problem area, where there seems to have been moisture damage in the past, and explained how the treatment should kill any ants my spraying had not as well as providing a residual knock down for any unhatched ants that came along later. They informed us that the treatment would take 7 to 10 days during which period I would still see a few ants but to let them know if the problem persisted.

The professional was very willing to share some suggestions on what to look for and what preventitive steps to take to help prevent this from occurring again. Here are the suggestions I have gotten from the professionals as well as those that friends and neighbors have gotten from them as well.

Border/Area Treatments - If you live in an area with a lot of old trees, there are probably carpenter ants in the area. Keeping them out of your house is the best solution. There are many granular and liquid treatments. Apply them from the house outward (you want to keep them out, not push them closer to your home!). If you are using an area treatment as more than a border guard, make sure that you start near the home and work outward.

Look for Ants - The most obvious sign of a problem is ants - if you see many of them in a small area, you might have a problem. You may always have a few isolated ants around, but if you are finding a couple every day in a specific area you may have a problem.

Check the Interior - Carpenter ants often gain access in areas where water damage has softened up the wood for them to work with. Look for discolored areas where you have have had water (where it should not be) in the past. Also check for signs of ant activity. The most obvious sign is small areas where there appears to be sawdust (a result of the ants boring through wood). Also look for any areas that might indicate access to the outside - in my case, there are areas where (once the insulation is moved) you can see daylight between the foundation and the frame of the house.

Seal it up - Caulk, putty, or otherwise seal up any openings you found. Caulking seams is a fairly quick and easy process. If you see areas where there was water damage, you will want to address whatever may have caused the damage (if water can get in, ants probably an also!)

When in doubt, call a Professional - Many local companies will provide free analysis and estimates. If you are unsure you have a problem, contact them. The sign of a good DIY home handyman is knowing when to call for backup.

Whenever spring arrives here at Backyard Gardening Tips we start getting a lot of questions about getting rid of the ants that are building their anthill condos on our properties and ruining picnics everywhere.

Anthills seem to sneak up on home owners.

One day there are no ants and then BAM they are everywhere and in everything. Then the anthill starts growing on a daily basis.

Not too many people like ants, except little boys with magnifying glasses.

There are a number of recipes for killing ants where they expand until they explode.

Baking soda and icing sugar.

Ants seem to have insatiable appetites and are always on the hunt for something to eat. A good home remedy of baking soda and icing sugar will temporarily satisfy them, well until they swell up and explode.

Note: There may be a slight explosion just before they bother you no longer.

By eating the mixture for the icing sugar the ants can’t help to digest some of the baking soda and that’s all it takes to get rid of ants.

You don’t have to worry about dead ants lying around the house and yard as they usually carry the deadly combo back home with them and life ends under ground.

You can do the trick with a mix of about 50/50 baking soda to icing sugar.

To spread the mix you can use a bottle. Just poke a few holes in the top of the lid and start shaking those ants up a bit.

Using Cornmeal or Grits

This years we gave cornmeal a try. Ants just seem to love corn but they can’t digest the cornmeal and starve to death or bloat up and die. Either way it works great.

Put the pressure on those ants, literally. We haven’t use grits here in New Brunswick but further south it has been an ant killer recipe for quite a while.

The ants love it, eat it like little piggies and promptly explode.

Get your ants to move next door.

Lime is very corrosive so avoid having it touch your skin and keep away from pets. This makes its use less advisable than other methods. Ants don’t like it and will avoid it so it makes for a great barrier they won’t cross.

Another use for baby power.

I usually reserve the baby power for playing 9 ball but if it will get rid of ants then I have another use for the baby power.

Good ole table salt.

Use the table salt to block any entry ways they have found into your house. They won’t cross the salt line.

It’s time to draw the line, with Chalk.

Where ever you want to block the path of marching ants think chalk. Just pour a little line of chalk to block any entry. Works great around the outside of your house.

You can buy Ant Chalk but it has insecticide in it so you may want to skip this one if you don’t want to use insecticides.

Boric Acid Powder.

A 50/50 mix of boric acid powder and plain old sugar. Make a slurry in a bottle by adding water to the mix and you’re good to go and so are the ants.

Boric Acid is toxic enough that you don’t want your family or pets eating it so keep it where they can’t get into it.

The boric acid has to be ingested by the ants for it to work unlike some other methods where walking through it will work.

Hopefully this information on getting rid of ants and anthills is beneficial to you.

Dealing with Anthills in your yard. It’s no fun having ants and anthills in your yard when it only takes a little know-how and a few minutes to deal with them. http://runurl.com/xx.php?lax

A question frequently asked is how to get rid of carpenter ants in the house?

Ants Who Live With Company
Our example today concerns two very different ant species that live in British Guiana. One species, a large brown ant, lives together with a small black ant.

How To Get Rid Of Ants In Your Home
If you wake up one morning and find your kitchen infested with ants then you need to act fast before they make their home in your house. In case you don’t like sprays, here is an alternative!

Getting Rid Of Ants Naturally
Diatomaceous earth is useful to sprinkle around baseboards or even in your garden. This will kill an ant who comes into contact with it. Both serve a useful purpose in getting rid of your ant problem.

Ants - red, black, winged, un-winged, big, and small are all pests. They march silently into your home and garden and wreck havoc, eating into your clothes and even your furniture. They are merciless.

Ants Driving You Antsy?

Ants can destroy anybody’s mood, whether you’re raving mad or feeling romantic. The moment they sting, you freeze and itch. When they raid the pantry, the books, and the clothes, you can curse yourself to the next county, but they will stay unless you take up arms against these tiny pests.

Just when you’re enjoying your carrots coated with roasted garlic, they come in swarms to the picnic basket. These pests can really destroy the mood for a carefree afternoon picnic in the park. And when they invade the home, prepare for the havoc they can wreck. One way you can get them out is keeping all food scraps and trash bins far from the house.

But if it is still not enough, time to boil those red hot chili peppers and pour this over the ant mounds. With ants as enemies, you’ve got to practice Kaizen. ‘Kaizen’ is a Japanese word that means a gradual, orderly effort towards continuous improvement. In the case of ants, it’s the improvement of your artillery to wipe out the pest from your home.

Red Hot Chili Peppers?

With the profusion of chemicals and pesticides, its better to go natural to rid the pests to kingdom come. Here’s what you’ll need:

1. an old kettle that can hold a gallon of water
2. 3 cups fresh or dried chili peppers
3. a pair of long gloves
4. eye protection
5. Syringe (2)

You can boil more than 1 gallon, if you think you need more ammunition. It’s always handy to have an extra gallon around when you attack the ant mounds. Don’t attempt to go near the steam and keep children out of the way. When you’re ready, deck yourself out with a pair of long gloves and as much as possible avoid contact with the water. In case you accidentally do have contact, be ready to prepare a glass of cold milk to rub over the affected skin area.

Find the ant hill or mound, or look in the garden. They may be hiding under a rock. Don’t disturb the peace until you have boiled the water together with the chili. With a syringe, extract the chili-infused water and inject into all openings in the ant mound. Destroy the ant mound, but be ready with your "hot" water. Expect pandemonium, so be prepared with enough hot water to flood the disturbed mound.

Regular dousing will send the ants packing, or greatly reduce their numbers. You can also use the same concoction for aphids and other plant pests. For this, reduce the number of chili to 2 cups. Share the recipe with your neighbors to prevent the return of the pests.

Anti-ant Measures

Ants love to feed on scraps. Take all leftovers and wrap them up before tossing into the garbage pile and promptly wipe the table with a rag soaked with a disinfectant and water solution. Remove all water trapped in outdoor containers. Ants need water to survive, too.

Be regular in your anti-ant campaigns. They can’t stand the sting of chili peppers and boiling water. They’ll move away, alas, to your neighbor’s house and garden.

You only want the best for your ant-free home - always. A hip flask or personalized mugs should do just fine without emptying your money clip wallets.
Ants tend to build a variety of homes ranging from the common little dirt mounds we often see in our yards to more elaborate structures created with sand and small sticks. These more imaginative homes offer the ant added protection from water and rain. You can discover some ants which reside in pieces of wood similar to their relatives the termite. The army ants do not have a permanent home but they travel as a group in search of food.

You always have three different types of ants known as the queen, the female workers who are sterile and the males. The only purpose of the male ant is to mate with the queen ants. The queen ant progresses to adulthood, she mates and spends the remainder of her days laying eggs.

The ant’s species will progress through four different stages of their development: the egg, the larva, the pupa and finally adult.

Ants are composed of three main body sections. These sections are their head, their trunk and the rear known as the metasoma. The ant has six legs which are attacked to its trunk. Their head has eyes, jaws and their antennae. The ant’s eyes are composed of a multitude of lenses which enable them to visualize movements very well. Within the antennae are organs which allow them the sense of touch, smell, hearing and taste. The rectum and stomach is located in the metasoma.

An interesting point made about ants is that they do not have any lungs. They have tiny holes located over their body which allows the oxygen to enter their body. They have no sort of blood vessels. A long tube represents the heart and pumps colorless blood back and forth within the body.

If you were to spend a few hours carefully observing ants you would quickly discover that they possess an effective means of communication between each other. Ants make good use of their antennae by using it to touch and this communicate with their fellow ants.

During the summer month’s people will continually complain of ant infestations within their homes. A glance at the sidewalk in front of many homes will show a trail of these little workers leading from one point to another. I have often been asked what is the safest way to get rid of unwanted ants. Generally these people do not wish to use a dangerous chemical in the process.

I have found that a safe and non poisonous alternative is to use the common breakfast food known as Cream of Wheat. Cream of Wheat will kill the ants off naturally. All you need to do is sprinkle the Cream of Wheat right from the box onto the ground where the ants are traveling. The industrious ants will carry the dry cream of wheat off with them and they in turn will eat it. The ant’s body fluids will cause the digested cereal to start expanding and the ants will simply blow up.

There are approximately 91,000 species of insects in the United States alone. In the world, there are about 10 quintillion individual insects at any one time.

With massive numbers such as these, it is no surprise that at times it can be hard to tell insects apart from each other. Two very important insects which can have great impacts on a home are termites and ants. Mistaking these insects for one another can cause unwanted consequences for your home.

Swarming termites and flying ants are commonly mistaken for one and the same, with most people mistaking a wingless termite for an ant. However, there are three distinct characteristics from which to differentiate the two insects.

Antennae

Ants have "elbowed" antennae, which are bent at an angle.

Termites have beaded antennae, similar to a string of beads.

Wings

Ants have larger fore wings than their hind wings.

Termites have their fore and hind wings of equal size.

Waist

Ants have a thin and narrow waist.

Termites have a broad waist.

Besides these three tell-tale signs, you can tell which insect is which by inspecting the body - the ant has three distinct body parts which include the head, abdomen, and thorax. The ant’s body is separated into two body parts while the termites have just a head and one continuous body.

After Insect Identification

If you have determined that the flying insect in your home is a termite, there could be a variety of causes to think about before you take any action. A few swarmers found indoors could just mean that the termites came in through the home on someone’s skin or shirt or simply flown through an open door or window. Termites can even be found crawling through bathroom and kitchen vents. However, if you find a large number of termites, it may be an indication of a colony in or underneath the home’s structure. In these cases, the home needs to be inspected and possibly treated by a pest control operator. A professional and thorough termite inspection will determine how serious the termite problem is and if any treatments are necessary.

Swarmers that land on the exterior of your home are usually not a cause for concern as it means that they simply landed somewhere. Termite swarmers cannot harm the home, as they do not eat wood. The worker termite on the other hand, does consume wood and can cause great damage to a home or building.

It is important to not only be able to identify which type of insect is in your home, but what appropriate actions to take to get the pests out of your home or even how to treat an existing infestation.

Do you have black ants? Get rid of black ants by following the procedures laid out in this article.

Most black ants are Carpenter Ants.

Carpenter Ants do not eat wood, but they will tunnel into it. They use the soft, decaying wood to make their nests.

You can’t just spray black ants. Get rid of this household menace by putting out bait for them to take back to the nest. When you spray, you only kill the ants you can see, but when you put out bait, you can kill off an entire colony.

While there are commercial baits, these use harsh chemicals that can harm children and pets. Instead, use a natural remedy deal with black ants. Get rid of black ants using a bait of Cream of Wheat. The dry cereal is carried back to the nest by the worker ants. All the ants in the nest eat the Cream of Wheat and when they ingest it, the cereal interacts with the body juices of the ant and the ant explodes.

If you do want to spray the visible ants, that’s okay, but don’t use a toxic commercial product. You can mix a few drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray jar and spray the ants with that mixture. It works as well as the commercial stuff without leaving a dangerous chemical residue behind.

Do you want to permanently eliminate black ants? Get rid of Carpenter Ants by leaving coffee granules around the kitchen. The ants won’t come near dry coffee.

How to Kill Ants in Your Home and Garden
By April Kerr

You will find that ants are found all over the world and all over the world they are considered to be pests. They just seem to be able to cause such a nuisance of themselves by getting into your food and destroying your plants because they build anthills at the root of the plants and using the nutrition of the plants as their own food.

There are various types of ants and all types do not live in the house. There are some types of ants which live outside the house and some live inside the house. The most commonly known ants are weaver ants, leaf cutter ants, fire ants, driver ants etc. The ants live in a colony and they have lots of unity amongst themselves. It is very difficult to drive away an ant as it has the tendency of finding out ways and means to reach the food material that it wants to carry to the anthill.

Using Pesticide to Kill Ants

As with any pest that you have on your property, you will want to eradicate the ants. There are two types of ants that invade the house. One is the black ant that lives outside the house and enters the house in search of food. These ants are harmless. The other is the carpenter ant which makes cavities inside the house which is very harmful as in the long run these cavities may cause damage to the structure of the building. So it is highly essential to eliminate these ants totally from the house. When searching for ant killer you will see that there are a number of different methods to choose from. Although pesticides can be used you need to know that they can be quite harmful to the environment and you should keep them away from children and any pets. The best way is to call the pest control department and ask them to use their pest control device to kill the ants.

Are There Any Natural Ant Killers?

If you do not want to use chemicals to kill the ants there are various things available on your kitchen shelf and on the dressing table which can kill the ants. These natural products do not have any harmful effect on the members of the house. If you see hordes of ant in the kitchen follow their trail and then fill the hole with turmeric powder, also line the entire area from the hole to the place of their invasion with turmeric powder and after some time you will find the ants have vanished. Wipe the floor with vinegar mixed in water and the ants will not enter the house. The colony can be wiped off by pouring boiling water in the slits where the ants have made the ant hill. So use the natural method and keep your house free from ants.

April has written a number of articles relating Ant Pest Control including: Natural Ant Killer and Exterminators in Georgia.
